Amsterdam lightfestival

The Amsterdam light festival is one of the biggest light festivals in the world, with more than 260 works of art, 8 exhibitions, and more than 5 million visitors since 2012. In addition to organizing the annual festivals, the foundation is also actively involved throughout the year in sharing knowledge and expertise and contributing to the development of the art discipline. The 2019-2020 light festival is about disruption. When people think about disruption they usually think of chaos, danger, or conflicts but disruption can also have a positive function. It can have a practical impetus on change. Because of disruptions, people get a voice, or organizations take action. A form of positive disruption were the riots in protest of the death of George Floyd. It is a positive form of disruption because the riots were a form of protest against police brutality and racism.

The festival is held in the centrum of Amsterdam. In Amsterdam-West the light festival is not as available. The foundation wants it to be more available for the different cultures in Amsterdam-West. My school is in New-West so we got the instruction to make an art light piece for the community in the theme disruption.

The lightwork will be placed close by the Sloterplas and will connect cultures.
